Across her practice, Sarah Parker weaves narratives composed of tightly interlocked metaphors. Every figure – whether human, animal or mythological – becomes a character within an allegorical scene. Poetic ciphers, these figures are conduits for emotion and affect. For in this work, tenderness is enlisted as a conceptual strategy and emotion becomes a forceful and poignant analytical device.
Allusions to literature, art history and folklore punctuate her paintings and sculpture. Borrowed mythology is intertwined with Sarah’s own personal history. Yet even as the work tips into memoir it flirts with fiction. It is this dense network of found and familiar stories that defines the scope and sincerity of her symbolic vocabulary.
